A charming late 19th-century French pastoral landscape, depicting cattle standing in shallow water while a young woman rests quietly on the riverbank. Painted on artist’s board and presented in a simple antique gilt frame, the scene has a wonderfully peaceful rural quality, with distant mountains and a softly illuminated evening sky opening beyond the grazing herd. Has been recently cleaned and professionally revarnished.
The landscape expands beautifully beyond the foreground. Low fields and wooded countryside lead toward a distant mountain range, painted in hazy blue and violet tones beneath a softly coloured sky. Touches of peach and pale pink along the horizon suggest the warm light of late afternoon or early evening.
Good antique condition with age-related surface character consistent with its period. The antique gilt frame retains an attractive historic patina with expected rubbing, marks and areas of wear to the gilded surface.
