Antique Dutch Cat with Fish Oil Painting, Signed, Gold Framed
A wonderfully characterful Dutch oil painting of a cat with fish bones by Lucie “Loes” Meeles-van Groningen (1884–1970). Painted with wonderfully loose, expressive brushwork, the rather satisfied-looking cat crouches over the remains of a fish, giving the painting a wonderfully mischievous little narrative.
The painting is signed “L. v. Groningen” lower right and is presented in a particularly handsome antique gilt frame with deeply moulded classical ornamentation.
Good antique condition with age-related surface character consistent with its period. The substantial antique gilt frame retains a beautiful aged patina with expected historic wear.
About the Artist
Lucie “Loes” Meeles-van Groningen (Zwolle, 1884 – Bussum, 1970) was a Dutch painter who received an unusually extensive artistic education. She studied at the academy in The Hague, the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, and subsequently at the Académie Colarossi in Paris. In 1913 she married the painter Derk Meeles (1872–1958) and moved to the artists’ community of Laren, where the couple lived at a house known as De Vlasschuur. Van Groningen remained there until 1968. She painted landscapes, portraits, flowers and still lifes, working in an impressionistic-naturalistic manner. Her brushwork became increasingly free and expressive as her career progressed.
