Antique École de Paris (Paris School) Large Academic Male Nude Oil Painting, Framed

A striking large Paris School academic nude dating from the turn of the century, depicting an older bearded male model seated in a wonderfully introspective pose. Recently professionally restored with relining, cleaning and a new varnish, the painting is presented in an exceptional carved Montparnasse frame, whose beautifully distressed surface gives the work tremendous presence.

An older, heavily bearded male model sits naked on a simple wooden stool, likely on a platform in studio, his head lowered and his hands resting across one knee. Rather than adopting an idealised heroic pose, the sitter appears completely absorbed in thought. His stooped shoulders, lowered gaze and powerful but ageing body give the painting an unusually introspective and human quality.

This kind of sustained study of the nude formed an essential part of academic artistic training in Paris, where artists worked directly from models to develop their understanding of anatomy, proportion, light and the human form. Particularly appealing here is the refusal to idealise the sitter. The artist records an older male body with remarkable directness of a Parisian studio study rather than a mythological or allegorical nude.

The painting has recently undergone professional restoration, including relining of the original canvas, cleaning and the application of a fresh protective varnish. These treatments have stabilised the work and revived the subtle tonal contrasts of the painted surface. Very good restored antique condition.
