Antique Flower Oil Painting, Roses Bouquet, Original Signed and Dated
A beautiful large late 19th-century (Dated 1892) floral by Charles Stoecklin (1859–1946), depicting an abundant bouquet of roses and delicate garden flowers arranged loosely against a soft, atmospheric background. Signed and dated by the artist at the upper right, the painting is presented in a substantial and richly ornamented antique gilt frame.
The composition is wonderfully generous, with a mass of flowers seemingly spilling across the centre of the canvas. Rather than arranging the bouquet rigidly in a vase, Stoecklin has allowed the flowers to form a broad, almost cascading mound, giving the painting a relaxed and romantic quality. The palette is especially appealing. Powdery pinks, ivory, pale yellow and touches of blue are set against a muted background of sage green, grey and earthy brown, allowing the individual blooms to emerge softly rather than through dramatic contrast.
The painting is signed by Charles Stoecklin at the upper right and dated 1892.
Good antique condition with age-related surface character consistent with its period. The substantial antique gilt frame retains a beautiful historic patina with expected rubbing, darkening, marks and areas of wear to the gilded surface.
Charles Stoecklin
Charles Stoecklin, also recorded as Carl Gregor Stöcklin, was born in Mulhouse on 1 November 1859 to Swiss parents. After attending the drawing school in Mulhouse, he went to Paris in 1881 to study at the Académie Julian. He later taught drawing in Mulhouse before settling in Switzerland, where he served as a drawing professor at the Collège St-Charles in Porrentruy from 1914 to 1925. His known work encompasses portraits, landscapes, still lifes and flower paintings, and records from Galerie des Annonciades state that he exhibited at the Paris Salon. He eventually settled in Lausanne, where he died in 1946. Floral painting was clearly an established part of Stoecklin’s practice. Surviving documented works include compositions devoted specifically to roses and garden flowers, making this large bouquet particularly representative of that aspect of his work.
