RESERVED - Dated 1868 Marie Fontaine - Antique Floral Still Life with Roses Pastel

RESERVED - Dated 1868 and Signed by the amazing French artist Marie Fontaine 1816-1877, an amazing 19th Century original French pastel of flowers. This pastel is exceptional! Signed by the accomplished French artist and painted out of the Fontaine family studio in Versailles at 4 rue Royale, Versailles where Marie worked and lived with her husband Edme Adolphe Fontaine 1814-1883.

About the artist Marie Fontaine 1816-1877:
Marie was born in Paris in 1816, studied at the prestigious Paris art school for women artists "atelier de demoiselles" run by Marie-Amelie Cogniet. Meeting her husband Edme, who was also in the partner art school for boys, the two married and moved to Versailles where they kept a home, studio and raised a family

Marie and Edme had wonderful artistic careers as husband and wife both showing at the Paris Salon many times though their lives. The records I was able to find showed Marie Fontaine with 4 separate works shown at the Paris Salon, of Floral still life and Portraiture, all in Pastel. They raised some very talented children, with their daughter Marie-Claire also showing at the Paris Salon as a teenager around the year 1880.

Looking at this floral work it's clear Marie Fontaine is a pastel specialist :)

As with all artwork, the backside tells the story. It is signed in pencil "Marie Fontaine - 1868" and "Marie Fontiane - 1868" on the front. There are two tickets on the back, one from the frame maker and one from the framer. The maker "Fabricante" is Collard & Prodhomme and the framer is "Bourdier" both companies in Versailles with addresses next to the Fontaine studio. This exceptional antique work is Framed Behind Glass and has a beautiful gilt frame. The frame has gone though multiple restorations in it's history and does have it's original glass still intact. The Pastel is sealed inside a little glass vacuum to keep it clear of dust. Our framer has recently opened it up to reset and clean the glass from the inside. Now been resealed and reset in the frame. It should be able to sit on the wall for another 50 years before being enjoyed by future generations.
