A wonderfully atmospheric French coastal landscape dating to around 1860, depicting a bustling Channel port as evening begins to settle over the water. The precise location is unknown, although the architecture and coastline suggest the northern French Channel coast, likely somewhere between Dieppe and Trouville-sur-Mer.
Along the waterfront, figures gather beside imposing seaside buildings while small boats make their way towards shore. Beyond them, sailing vessels appear as silhouettes against the horizon. The soft pink of the fading evening sky reflected across the water gives the painting a particularly beautiful sense of dusk and contrasts with the darker buildings and shoreline in the foreground. The subject belongs to a fascinating period in the history of the Normandy coast.
