Antique French Floral Oil Painting | Roses in Montparnasse Frame
A wonderfully decorative turn-of-the-century French floral still life, depicting a lush arrangement of roses in soft shades of ivory, blush pink, buttery yellow and deep crimson. Dating from around 1900, the painting is especially striking in its magnificent carved Montparnasse frame, whose wonderfully timeworn surface gives the whole piece tremendous character.
Large open blooms dominate the centre, painted in wonderfully subtle shades of cream, pale yellow, dusty pink and soft coral, while deeper burgundy-red flowers recede into the shadows. Several partially opened roses rise above the main arrangement, giving the bouquet a loose, almost garden-like quality. Moving from deep brown and green at left into softer olive and grey tones at right, it allows the pale roses to emerge dramatically from the shadows. The result has a rich, romantic quality characteristic of French floral painting around the turn of the century.
Good antique condition with age-related surface character consistent with its period. The Montparnasse frame has extensive historic wear, rubbing, cracking and losses to its painted and gilded surface. This beautifully distressed finish forms an important part of the frame’s antique character.
