Antique French Nude Oil Painting, Large 19th C Large, Original on Canvas
A beautiful and atmospheric Large and unframed late 19th-century French nude, attributed on the reverse to Auguste Alexandre Millot (1852–1916). The sitter is shown outdoors beside a quiet pool, her pale figure emerging dramatically against a deep landscape of greens and blue-black shadows. The restrained palette and contemplative pose give the painting a wonderfully intimate quality.
The artist has constructed the figure from soft passages of ivory, pale rose, ochre and muted grey, beautifully contrasting with the dark greens and browns of the surrounding landscape. Behind her, a glimpse of brilliant blue-green water and sky provides depth and a subtle flash of colour.
Good antique condition with visible age-related craquelure, surface wear and historic marks consistent with a late 19th-century oil painting. Please refer closely to the photographs for the current condition of the painted surface.
About Auguste Alexandre Millot
Auguste Alexandre Millot (1852–1916) was a French painter from the Nièvre who moved to Paris in 1878 and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in the atelier of Henri Lehmann. He subsequently became a drawing professor at the Collège Chaptal in Paris. Millot is particularly interesting today because his work is represented in French public collections. La Forge is held by the Musée de la Faïence et des Beaux-Arts de Nevers, while Saint-Jean-Baptiste prêchant dans le Désert is preserved at the church of Colméry. The Musée des Beaux-Arts et d’Histoire Naturelle de Châteaudun also holds his painting Roses trémières, originally deposited by the French State in 1906.
