Antique French Oil on Velvet of Birds (Eurasian Blue Tits). Turn of the Century Paris. Oval Gilt Frame

A rare and charming turn-of-the-century French painting depicting two Eurasian blue tits perched on flowering branches. Painted in oil on velvet and mounted on a painter’s panel, this delicate work originated in Paris around 1890–1910 and remains housed in its original oval gilt frame.

This atmospheric antique painting shows two beautifully rendered Eurasian Blue Tits resting on slender branches, surrounded by soft pink blossoms. The artist used the unusual technique of oil on velvet, a method popular in France around 1900 for its rich depth and velvety matte finish. Against the dark velvet ground, the birds appear almost luminous, their plumage captured with remarkable subtlety.

The work’s Parisian origin is suggested by both its style and materials. At the turn of the century, Parisian decorative ateliers frequently produced naturalist compositions like this, refined, intimate studies intended for elegant interiors. The combination of natural history subject matter and luxurious materials makes this piece especially desirable.
