A fascinating late 19th-century landscape by French painter Jean Alfred Marioton (1864–1903), an artist best known for his ambitious mythological and figure paintings. Here Marioton turns his attention to a remarkably understated rural scene, depicting bare trees, tall poplars and distant farm buildings beneath a pale winter sky. Signed or inscribed at the upper right and presented in a wonderfully unusual striped antique gold frame. We were told this landscape came directly from the family estate of Marioton, likely painted originally for his own home rather than to be put in market. Recently cleaned and professionally revarnished.

The composition depicts a broad field bordered by a dark hedgerow, beyond which a cluster of farm buildings and tall poplar trees rise against the horizon. Bare branches punctuate the skyline, suggesting late autumn or winter, while the almost monochromatic countryside disappears gradually into the hazy distance.

Good antique condition with age-related craquelure and surface character consistent with its period. The antique frame retains a particularly attractive historic patina, with rubbing, marks, darkening and areas of wear and loss to the decorative finish.

About Jean Alfred Marioton (1864–1903):
Jean Alfred Marioton (1864–1903) was born and died in Paris. He studied with some of the most prominent academic painters of his generation, including Jean-Léon Gérôme, Ernest Meissonier, William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. He competed for the Prix de Rome and received the second Grand Prix in painting in 1887 for The Death of Themistocles. He subsequently exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1887 and 1903. Marioton became particularly associated with mythological subjects, the human figure and large decorative schemes, including painted ceilings. One of his major mythological paintings, Ulysses and Nausicaa of 1888, is today in the collection of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. The large oil on canvas depicts the meeting of the two mythological figures and provides a striking counterpoint to the modest scale and private atmosphere of this woodland study.
