An exquisite 19th century French portrait by the listed artist Édouard Jolin 1817 - 1892. This romantic oil painting captures a graceful young woman glancing over her shoulder with poise and quiet confidence. A radiant example of classical French elegance.

This original portrait was painted by Édouard Jolin. Known for his refined technique and idealised depictions of women, Jolin exhibited in the Paris Salon and worked throughout the 19th century. His paintings are admired for their soft modelling of the face and rich ornamental detail. Here he presents a young woman adorned with pearls and dressed in a beautifully rendered gold gown with intricate trim. Her expression holds a subtle mystery as she looks beyond the frame. The dark background brings a spotlight effect to her luminous skin and classical features.

A period carved gilt frame completes the piece with a sense of historic glamour. This is a stunning artwork for collectors of French portraiture and interiors that celebrate romance and sophistication.

Artist Bio: Édouard Jolin (1817–1892)
Édouard Jolin was a French painter born in Nantes on 7 December 1817 and deceased in Paris on 5 March 1892. A pupil of the distinguished painter Paul Delaroche, Jolin developed his skills in the academic tradition of the mid-19th century. Throughout his career he exhibited regularly at the Salon de Paris from 1844 until 1869, showing works that ranged from religious and historic compositions to genre scenes. While many of his commissions were for churches or public-institutional settings, his style also reflects the refined sensibilities of portraiture and elegant figure painting. His catalogued works include Le Martyre de saint Gohard (1852) in the Cathédrale de Nantes, and Après la bataille d’Auray (ca. 1868) in the Musée des beaux-arts de Rennes. Jolin’s work stands as an example of the transition from Romantic historic painting to the more refined “Academic Realism” of the later 19th century.
