Antique French Portrait Oil Painting, late 19th century Framed
A beautiful late 19th French portrait of a young woman, painted on wood panel and presented in a charming antique wood burl frame. With her auburn hair, rosy cheeks and striking green eyes, the sitter wears a rich emerald-green dress with a golden-yellow scarf. This fashion was quite particular to Paris in the Belle Epoch of 1890-1900. Particularly interesting, the reverse of the panel features a second painting depicting flowers, making this an unusual double-sided antique artwork.
The artist has concentrated on the sitter’s face, giving her a remarkably natural appearance. Her slightly tilted head and relaxed expression create a sense of intimacy, while the loosely painted clothing adds a touch of spontaneity. The combination of rich greens, golden yellow and warm auburn tones is particularly attractive, giving the portrait a freshness that feels surprisingly contemporary.
Good antique condition with visible age-related surface character consistent with its period. The wooden frame retains an attractive aged patina, with expected rubbing, marks and small areas of wear to the finish. The reverse of the panel features a second floral composition.
