Antique French Portrait Oil Painting, 19th C Girl in Red Scarf, Framed
A good size and quite captivating Parisian portrait dating from around 1890, depicting a young woman wearing a vivid red headscarf tied beneath her chin. Her direct gaze, dark clothing and brilliantly coloured scarf create a wonderfully striking composition, made all the more impressive by the painting’s substantial and richly ornamented antique gilt frame.
The sitter faces the viewer directly, her expression quiet and self-possessed. A brilliant scarlet-red headscarf is drawn over her dark hair and tied loosely beneath her chin, framing her face and immediately becoming the focal point of the composition. Her clothing is deliberately understated, painted predominantly in deep charcoal and brown tones. This restrained palette makes the red scarf particularly powerful, while subtle touches of warmth across the sitter’s complexion prevent her face from becoming lost within the surrounding shadows.
Good antique condition with age-related surface character consistent with its period. The ornate antique gilt frame retains a beautiful historic patina with expected rubbing, marks, darkening and small areas of wear and loss.
