Dated 1812 - Antique Dutch Portrait Oil Paintings of a Married Man and Woman by Gerrit Laurens Keultjes (1786–1821)
A beautiful pair of portrait oil paintings, dated on the front for the year 1812. A lovely Dutch set of husband and wife painting in the Dutch School Style by the famous Dutch artist Gerrit Laurens Keultjes (1786-1821). The artist currently has a few paintings on display in the Rijksmuseum and has a famous story both with the Rijksmuseum and VOC (Dutch East India) below. These have been recently restored, cleaned and a new varnish applied. They come in newer style frames, the frames were likely put on within the last 20 years but they would be a close match to the types of frames used on portraits in early 1800s Netherlands.
About the Artist:
Gerrit Laurens Keultjes (1786–1821) was a Dutch painter from Utrecht, known for marine scenes and scientific illustrations. Trained at a Catholic orphanage, he began with portraits before focusing on seascapes after a voyage with Captain J. van Nes. In 1820, he joined a scientific expedition to Java, creating around 1,200 drawings of local flora and fauna that are later made famous for being lost by National Museum of Natural History in Leiden. He died in Bogor shortly after the expedition began. Notable works include *Saint Peter* (1816) and *The Attack on Algiers* (1817), both in the Rijksmuseum.

As nearly all items in the shop are over 100 years old and classified as “antique” or “antique art” the objects are considered “Duty Free”. Amsterdam Curated will provide the appropriate certifications for the customs officials to ensure all qualified items will be shipped with this “Duty Free” classification. In the UK, it is not "FREE" but there is a reduced VAT of 5% paid at import.
