Antique French Seascape Oil Painting with Ships, 1820-1825 in Gold Frame
A fascinating French seascape dating from around 1820, depicting a sailing vessel battling through rough coastal waters beneath a lighthouse and dramatically stormy sky. Particularly intriguing are the tiny flags incorporated into the scene, including a blue flag with a white cross on the vessel, closely associated with revolutionary-era Greece. Painted during a period of enormous political change in both France and Greece, the work has an unusually compelling historical dimension. The painting had a full restoration within the last 10 years including a re-canvassing with cleaning.
The scene is filled with narrative detail. Waves break across the foreground while the vessel heels in the wind, approaching the relative safety of the lighthouse. On shore, tiny figures can be seen beside the lighthouse buildings, emphasising the enormous scale of the sea and sky.
The vessel appears to fly a blue flag bearing a white cross, an emblem associated with the emerging Hellenic Greek state during the Greek War of Independence, which began in 1821. Greece’s struggle against Ottoman rule attracted enormous sympathy among artists and intellectuals in France, creating the cultural movement now known as Philhellenism. France openly supported the Greeks militarily during the war against the Ottomans. The small white flag above the lighthouse is also intriguing, it represents the Bourbon Restoration period and French Monarchy of 1814-1830, who came back to power after the fall of Napoleon I at Waterloo. Good antique condition with visible age-related craquelure and surface character consistent with a painting approximately two centuries old. Has been recently re-canvassed and cleaned. The antique gilt frame retains a beautiful historic patina with rubbing, marks and areas of wear appropriate to its considerable age.
