A wonderfully atmospheric French coastal seascape dating from circa 1880, depicting fishing boats navigating the restless waters of the Normandy coastline. Beneath towering cliffs, a small fishing vessel has been drawn close to the rocky shore while other boats sail across the distant horizon. Signed Beauchamp at the lower left and presented in a magnificent, richly ornamented antique gilt frame.

The painting beautifully captures the relationship between the Normandy fishing communities and the sea. During the 19th century, the Channel coast was home to numerous fishing villages, where small sailing vessels worked the coastal waters and were frequently hauled onto beaches or sheltered in natural harbours. The scene has a particularly evocative atmosphere. Soft blue-grey mountains, pale turquoise water and a gently clouded sky contrast with the dark fishing boat and rocky foreground. The artist has captured the movement of the waves and the hazy coastal distance, giving the composition a wonderful sense of depth.

Good antique condition with age-related surface character consistent with its period. The painting retains its atmospheric colour and detail. The substantial antique gilt frame is in attractive historic condition, with a beautifully aged patina, expected rubbing, marks, darkening and small areas of wear to the gilded decoration.
