An exceptional French portrait dated 1904 by Abel Bertram (1871–1954), depicting Marie Thérèse Dauchez (née Le Lièpvre, 1880–1946), wife of the celebrated French painter André Eugène Dauchez (1870–1948). Painted during the early years of Bertram’s career, when he was actively exhibiting at the Paris Salon, this intimate portrait is particularly fascinating for its connection to the artistic circles of Belle Époque Paris. Signed, dated and inscribed with the sitter’s name by the artist, it is presented in a magnificent antique gilt frame with elaborate Rococo-style ornamentation.

Her dark hair is carefully arranged in a fashionable Edwardian style, while her expression is remarkably direct and natural. Rather than presenting the sitter with the distant formality often associated with society portraiture, Bertram has captured something much more personal. The warmth of her complexion contrasts beautifully with the deep greens of the background, while the rust-red and terracotta tones of her dress give the painting a particularly rich and harmonious palette.

Abel Bertram (1871–1954)
Abel Bertram was a French painter whose career extended from the final decades of the 19th century into the middle of the 20th century. He was active within the Parisian artistic community during a period of considerable change, when the traditions of academic painting were increasingly challenged by Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and the emerging modern movements within the Paris School.

During the years surrounding 1904, Bertram was exhibiting at the Paris Salon, participating in the established artistic institutions that remained central to the careers of many French painters. This portrait is particularly interesting when compared with Bertram’s later work. While he would become associated with a freer and more modern approach to painting, here we see an artist working within the traditions of late 19th-century French portraiture, concentrating on the sitter’s likeness, individuality and carefully observed features. The result is a fascinating transitional work, combining the formal discipline of traditional portraiture with a growing freedom of expression.
The identity of the sitter gives this painting an especially compelling historical dimension.
The portrait is presented in a particularly beautiful antique gilt frame, richly decorated with sculptural Rococo-style ornament.

Condition:
Good antique condition with visible age-related craquelure and surface character consistent with a painting more than 120 years old. Recently professionally cleaned and revarnished. The frame has a broad gilded profile is embellished with elaborate scrolling acanthus leaves, floral motifs and deeply modelled corner decorations, creating an impressive architectural surround. The elaborate antique gilt frame retains a beautiful historic patina, with expected rubbing, marks, darkening and small areas of wear to the gilded decoration.
