A wonderfully decorative Dutch artist’s palette from the early 20th century, transformed into a charming painted panel featuring a male and female pair of Chaffinch birds (Fringilla coelebs) and a little nest with their new family with flowering branches against a striking turquoise-blue ground. The original daubs of dried paint remain visible around the edge, giving the piece a wonderfully authentic studio character.
What makes the piece especially appealing is that the palette itself remains part of the story. Along the upper and left edges, thick remnants of the artist’s original pigments are still present in shades of black, blue, green, ochre, white, and red. Rather than being cleaned away.
Good vintage condition with age-related surface wear consistent with its use as an artist’s palette. Original dried paint remains visible around the perimeter and forms an important part of the object’s character. It looks like there has been a split and repair, not distracting from the art work. Minor marks and wear to the exposed wood are present.
