Antique Pastoral River Landscape Oil Painting, Gold Frame

A beautifully atmospheric late 19th-century French landscape, depicting a tranquil river beneath the soft light of an expansive sky. A small boat rests among the reeds while two tiny figures walk along the shaded riverbank, giving this peaceful scene a wonderful sense of life and scale. Presented in an especially handsome and richly ornamented antique gilt frame.

The atmosphere is particularly appealing. A pale blue sky gradually warms toward the horizon, its light reflected across the silvery surface of the water. The foreground is richer and darker, built from deep greens, earthy browns and touches of gold, creating a natural transition from the shaded riverbank into the luminous distance.

Good antique condition with age-related surface character consistent with its period. The substantial antique gilt frame retains a beautiful historic patina with expected rubbing, darkening, marks and areas of wear and loss to the gilded decoration.
