Dated 1892 - Antique French Folk Art Racing Pigeon Portrait in Montparnasse Frame

This antique folk art oil painting shows a very renowned French prize pigeon, dating from 1892 and signed S Boland. This French legend racing pigeon has a very impressive resume as all the races he participated in during the years 1891, 1892, 1893 and 1894 are listed on the painting with his places in the race. You can see he was quite an impressive bird! You can also see that his race times from 1891/1892 are put on in a different colour than 1893/1893. Surely the artist is the either the pigeon owner and close to where the dates could be added in the years after the painting was created. It is an exceptional folk art painting, quite a big size, surely painted by a man who loved his prize racing pigeon. An incredible charming statement piece that would be made to memorialise this champion.

For anyone that doesn't know, the French and Belgians were crazy for racing pigeons in the late 19th Century. Netherlands and Germany also, but not like the French and Belgians. There's still a fanatic group of pigeons racing enthusiasts active today.

This 19th century painting comes in a frame that this pigeon deserves. The painting has some old restoration but they are not very noticeable on the front of the work. This painting has recently been to the restorer for a professional cleaning and new varnish applied. This heirloom piece of art is ready to hang for another 100 years.
