Antique Sheep Oil Painting – 19th Century Pastoral Landscape, Original and Gold Gilt Framed
A very good condition and highly collectible Belgian farm scene by Auguste Coomans (1855–1896), signed and dated 1894. Works by Coomans are increasingly sought after, particularly those that remain clearly signed and firmly dated within his lifetime, as is the case here.
Paintings by Coomans rarely appear with such clarity of attribution as seen by the artists note on the back, making this an especially strong example for collectors of 19th century Belgian, Dutch and French and animal painting.
The piece is presented in an impressive and richly detailed gilt frame, which enhances both its decorative presence and overall value. Very good antique condition consistent with age. Minor surface wear and light craquelure. The painting was just cleaned and revarnished by our restorer and the frame matches the painting condition.

Auguste Coomans was a Belgian painter active in the late 19th century, known for his refined depictions of rural life and livestock. Working within the strong Belgian tradition of animal and pastoral painting, Coomans developed a reputation for capturing scenes of the countryside with sensitivity and technical precision.
His works align with the broader European interest in agricultural subjects during this period, and today they remain appreciated for their timeless subject matter and solid academic foundation. Fully signed and dated examples from his lifetime are particularly desirable among collectors of regional European schools.
