18th Century - Antique French Hare + Bird Moody Still Life Oil Painting on Oak Panel
Dating from the 17th/18th century, a lovely French Antique Still Life / Hunting Scene. This antique oil painting is unframed on thick oak panel depicts a traditional French or Flemish hunting still life, dating to the late 17th or early 18th century. A hare and game birds hang after the hunt, rendered with bold light against a dark background in the dramatic Baroque style. Such works, known as natures "mortes de chasse", were popular in noble homes and hunting lodges, symbolising both abundance and mortality. Unsigned, the painting reflects the hand of a provincial workshop, with rich texture and strong chiaroscuro. A striking and atmospheric piece of early European still life art.
This antique panel seems to be cut from a larger painting. This piece is in overall good condition for it's age, there are some imperfections due to the natural material. We did send this one to the restorer for a professional cleaning and new varnish applied. There is an eyelet hanging from the back and this can be hung on the wall directly without framing. I actually prefer pieces like this without a frame :).
