A magnificent large mid-19th-century French fruit still life, depicting an overflowing basket of grapes, peaches, plums and other summer fruits arranged on a stone terrace overlooking a distant landscape. Richly decorative and beautifully composed, the painting has recently undergone a full professional restoration and cleaning, bringing renewed depth and clarity to its remarkable colours. Presented in a substantial period-style gilt frame.
The artist has introduced wonderful variety throughout the arrangement. The translucent greens of the grapes contrast with deep aubergine and blue-black fruit, while the peaches and apples are warmed by touches of gold, coral and deep red. Above the basket, a twisting vine rises against the sky, carrying leaves and clusters of bright red berries that give the composition additional height.
Very good restored antique condition. The painting has recently undergone a full professional restoration and cleaning, refreshing and stabilising the work while retaining its antique character. The gilt frame shows expected age-related rubbing, marks and areas of wear to the surface.
