Antique Victorian Dog Portrait Oil Painting | Resting Terrier on Red Velvet | Faithful Companion in Gold Framed
A beautifully executed and large-scale French animal portrait, painted in 1859 and signed Desportes, depicting a resting hunting dog stretched across a rich red cushion. We do think the breed is within the lineage of a poxer, possibily a Bullenbeisser type but we're the breed.
This is not a casual study. It sits firmly in the tradition of aristocratic animal portraiture, where dogs were painted with the same care and dignity as their owners. The composition is deliberate and confident: the deep, almost theatrical background frames the subject, while the warm red textile introduces a sense of luxury and status. The brushwork is controlled but expressive in the fur, with subtle tonal shifts that give real weight and presence to the animal.
Good antique condition. Surface shows age-appropriate craquelure and light wear. Has had a complete restoration including a new secondary canvas and professional cleaning. Presents very well. Frame with minor wear consistent with age. Presented in a substantial gilt frame, which complements the richness of the composition and reinforces the painting’s decorative impact.
