A pair of small 19th century genre scenes paintings depicting the famous story of the emancipated duel.

One painting mid-fight and one depicting the outcome. On rare occasion it did occur that two woman would battle in a duel. The dual would be done topless and with only women present including one woman to oversee medical treatment of the aristocrates. This was a way to see when blood was drawn and it was believed that clothing pressed into the wounds with the sword tip would lead to septic injuries.

The story - a disagreement over the floral arrangement:
In 1892, a unique duel took place in Liechtenstein, between Princess Pauline von Metternich and Countess Anastasia von Kielmansegg. The conflict began over a disagreement about flower arrangements at a Vienna musical exhibition but quickly escalated into a matter of personal honor.

The duel was fought topless, not for scandal but to prevent fabric from entering wounds, a precaution against infection. Armed with traditional swords, the two noblewomen faced off in a brief but intense duel with the winner to be determined by whom could draw first blood. The Countess drew first blood, which was enough to satisfy both parties' honor.

Afterward, they reconciled, and the duel became legendary, symbolizing the changing roles of women in European society and their assertion of independence, even within the strict codes of aristocracy. Within the following years, the story was told in castles, palors and pubs from Prague to London. The story being put onto the brush of this French painter.
