Dated 1903 French Dog Painting - Bichon Puppy named “Muguette” at 2 Months
A charming French dog painting dated 1903, signed Danty, depicting a young bichon-type puppy proudly holding a slipper. Full of warmth and personality, this affectionate portrait is made especially special by period inscriptions recording the dog’s name and age. The artist has rendered the puppy with softness and care, beautifully conveying the newborn fluffy coat, rounded features, and playful spirit typical of young Bichon dogs.
In the upper left corner, the name “Muguette” is inscribed, identifying the puppy. The choice of name is especially poetic: Muguette is french for the flower, lily of the valley. A white flower traditionally associated in France with purity, affection, and good fortune, a fitting name for a white puppy. In another corner, the inscription “2 Mos” records the dog’s age: two months old at the time of painting. The puppy’s pink nose, visible here, is consistent with immature pigmentation commonly seen in young bichon-type dogs and white companion breeds, often darkening as the dog matures.
Dated 1903 and signed Danty, the painting feels personal and affectionate, likely created as a keepsake rather than a purely decorative work. During the Belle Époque, bichon-type dogs were especially popular in France as cherished household companions, and named pet portraits like this were often commissioned to commemorate beloved animals.
Good antique condition with light age-related wear. Paint surface is stable. Frame shows patina and minor wear consistent with age, adding to the painting’s charm and authenticity. The paintng has been professionally restorer, sometime within the last 10 years and a new relining adding a secondary canvas for structure. The painting is housed in its original gilt frame, whose softly curved profile and aged patina complement the sweetness of the subject.
