Dated 1881 Large French Barbizon, Large Landscape Oil Painting in Ornate Gilt Frame

A beautifully painted large Barbizon School landscape from the late 19th century, executed on wood panel by a highly skilled French artist. Measuring approximately 28 x 25 inches including the frame, this work has a rich atmospheric presence and superb craftsmanship.

This striking Barbizon landscape captures a quiet clearing beside an old stone building, where sunlight breaks through the trees and spills across tall grasses. A little girl standing next to the farm with her goat, embracing the summer on the farm. The contrast between deep forest shadow and bright golden vegetation is handled with remarkable confidence, the kind of tonal sensitivity associated with the Barbizon painters of the mid-to-late 19th century.

The artist’s brushwork is expressive yet controlled, dense foliage rendered with layered greens and blues, the sky glimpsed between branches, and soft details that lead the eye through the shaded path toward the open landscape beyond. Though the painting no longer carries its signature, the painting clearly belongs to the tradition shaped by Corot, Daubigny, and the later plein-air painters who valued mood, natural light, and poetic simplicity over academic precision.

Painted on its original wood panel, the work has excellent stability and a pleasing surface texture. It is housed in a magnificent period gilt frame, richly carved with foliate ornament and beaded mouldings. The frame’s depth and sculptural quality match the painting’s scale and give it the presence of a museum piece. The painting is in good antique condition. It has been recently cleaned and a new varnish applied. Minor age wear and light craquelure expected for a 19th-century panel. Frame shows patina, rubbing, and small losses consistent with age, all contributing to its character. It looks like a restorer did some structural work on the panel some time ago, the panel repairs are quite charming, add a lot of character, age and would be dating to a little over 100 years ago.
