A beautiful Dutch still life dating from the turn of the 19th/20th century, depicting a freshly opened pomegranate resting on a simple ceramic plate, accompanied by two pieces of fruit. The brilliant ruby-red seeds contrast wonderfully with the dark background and rich green drapery beneath. Presented in an exceptional ornate antique frame, this intimate still life has a striking decorative presence.

Still life painting has a long and celebrated history in the Netherlands, particularly during the 17th century, when Dutch artists became renowned for their carefully composed arrangements of fruit, flowers and everyday objects. This painting belongs to the later continuation of that tradition, combining a restrained composition with a strong appreciation for colour, texture and the natural beauty of its subjects. The pomegranate is an especially interesting choice. Throughout European art history, it has carried associations with fertility, abundance, life and renewal, owing partly to its many seeds. In Christian imagery, the fruit could also symbolise resurrection and eternal life.

Good antique condition with age-related surface character consistent with its period. The ornate antique gilt frame retains a beautiful historic patina, with expected rubbing, marks and small areas of wear to the decorative gilding.
