Modernist Lilies Still Life – Expressive Floral Oil Painting, Paris School in Montparnasse Frame by Parisian artist "Chériane"
A striking Paris School still life of lilies, titled "Les Lys", by the French artist Chériane (Anne Chérie Charles, 1898–1990), painted in the 1920s with bold, modernist flair.
This captivating 1920s Paris School still life by Chériane presents a dynamic and expressive composition of lilies arranged across a richly draped fabric. The deep blue drapery/paper provided by the Parisian florist beneath them acts almost like a stage, enhancing the contrast and giving the composition a theatrical presence. The brushwork is fluid and assured, reflecting the evolving artistic language of interwar Paris, where artists explored form, colour, and composition with greater freedom.
The painting is titled “Les Lys”, as noted on the reverse, grounding the work in the artist’s own hand and intention. The painting has just had a visit to our restorer for a professional cleaning and new varnish applied.

Artist Bio — Chériane (Anne Chérie Charles, 1898–1990)
Chériane, born Anne Chérie Charles in Paris in 1898, was an active participant in the vibrant Parisian art scene of the early 20th century. Studied at the woman art school Académie Julian, she began exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants in 1921, a key platform for progressive artists outside the traditional academic system. By 1928, she was also exhibiting at the Salon d’Automne, where she became a member, placing her firmly within the circle of artists shaping modern French art between the wars.
Chériane was notably engaged in supporting the visibility of women artists. She exhibited with the Société des Femmes Artistes Modernes (FAM), founded in 1931, a group dedicated to promoting female artists at a time when opportunities remained limited. She also took part in collaborative exhibitions such as those organised at the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune, a significant venue for modern art in Paris. Her connections within artistic and literary circles were strong, including close associations with fellow artists such as Andrée Jacob, and later her marriage to the poet Léon-Paul Fargue, reflecting her deep integration into the cultural life of Paris. Chériane’s work reflects the transition from academic tradition toward a more modern, decorative and expressive style, characteristic of the Paris School during the interwar period.
