Pair of Antique Couple Portraits, Husband & Wife, Ornate Gold Framed

An exceptional pair of French portraits dating from 1849, depicting a gentleman and lady, believed to be husband and wife, in beautifully preserved examples of mid-19th-century formal dress. Both paintings are presented in magnificent matching antique gilt frames, lavishly decorated with sculptural flowers, foliage and ribbons. An inscription on the reverse identifies Jean Jacques Théodore Giscard, whom we believe to be the gentleman portrayed.

Both sitters look directly toward the viewer, their expressions composed and dignified. The matching backgrounds, proportions and presentation strongly suggest that the paintings were commissioned together as a pair. Portraits such as these were important expressions of family identity and social standing, commissioned to preserve the likenesses of individuals for future generations.

Both frames are richly decorated with elaborate, high-relief floral ornament. Large sculptural arrangements of roses, leaves, berries and tied ribbons extend across the corners, while smaller bouquets and foliate details embellish the broad gilded surfaces.

Good antique condition with age-related surface character consistent with paintings dating from 1849. Recently cleaned and professionally revarnished. The exceptional matching gilt frames retain a beautiful historic patina, with expected rubbing, marks, darkening and small areas of wear and loss to the elaborate floral ornamentation.
