Pair of Antique French Portraits, Husband & Wife, 1850, Gold Framed
A wonderful and beautifully preserved pair of German husband-and-wife portraits, dated 1850 by Wilhelm Pilgram (1814–1889). Still together after more than 175 years, the portraits have a striking quiet intimacy, with the gentleman in formal black evening dress and his wife wearing a vivid green silk bow and lace collar. Their matching antique gilt frames make them particularly special as a pair.
Together, the paintings are a lovely document of a 19th-century marriage and there is something especially appealing about finding the two portraits still preserved as the pair for which they were originally conceived. Their identical dimensions, dark backgrounds and matching frames create a wonderfully balanced presentation when hung alongside one another.
Both paintings are in good antique condition with age-related surface character consistent with works dating from 1850. Both have been recently cleaned and professionally revarnished. The matching antique gilt frames retain their beautifully aged surfaces with rubbing, marks and small areas of historic wear appropriate to their age.
About Wilhelm Pilgram
Wilhelm Pilgram was born in Stuttgart on 8 April 1814 and died there on 29 October 1889. He initially trained in Stuttgart before continuing his studies at the Vienna Academy under Friedrich von Amerling, one of the great portraitists of the Austrian Biedermeier period. Pilgram subsequently continued his artistic education in Paris. Although Pilgram worked across portraiture, genre, historical and decorative painting, portraiture formed an important part of his career. Surviving examples include his 1859 portrait of philosopher Immanuel Hermann Fichte and the impressive 1862 Der junge Naturforscher. His 1868 portrait of Karl Heinrich Ludwig Hoffmann is today preserved in the University of Tübingen’s collection of academic portraits.
