1960 - Vintage Abstract Expressionist Oil Painting
A beautiful vintage red coloured abstract expressionist painting with heavy impasto by the Dutch artist Paul Maas (1936-2021). A striking abstract painting in deep red and blacks the impasto give the sections of the painting great texture and an extra dimension. Signed in lower right corner by the artist "Paul Maas". This vintage painting comes in a thin wood frame. Paul Maas and his gallery and exhibition list is printed on the back. He did have a long and impressive career working as an artist within the Dutch Abstract Expressionist movement winning many awards over the years, that is also documented on the back of the painting. The painting has had some very small repairs from pinhole holes and went for a visit to the restorer, but not noticeable on the front, please see all photos.
A note about Abstract Expressionism in the 1960s Amsterdam:
Abstract Expressionist art in the Netherlands during the 1960s was shaped by local traditions and broader postwar European movements. It followed the legacy of the CoBrA group (active 1948–1951), whose members like Karel Appel and Corneille emphasised spontaneity and emotional expression, influencing later abstract painters.
Dutch Abstract Expressionism differed from its American counterpart by being more introspective and philosophical. Artists explored existential themes and often used unconventional materials, favouring texture and mixed media over pure action painting with icons like Karel Appel, Lucebert and Jaap Wagemaker. Institutions like the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam helped legitimise the movement. Dutch artists engaged with international styles like art informel and the Zero movement, creating a distinctively European approach to Abstract Expressionism.
